What is flame weeding?

Flame weeding consists in destroying young weeds with heat, without any mechanical action on the soil. The flame causes plant cells to burst: the seedlings wilt within hours, without any need to scrape or turn the soil.

On our micro-farm, Les Jardins de la Valette, we use a flame weeder developed by Neversink Farm. This tool, designed specifically for micro-farms, allows us to manage weeds effectively.

Adapted to the scale of our farm, this flame weeder is ergonomic and easy to use, even in confined spaces.

The benefits of flame weeding

Adopting flame weeding offers many benefits for market gardeners, including:

  1. Ease of use: the tool is light and allows you to weed a bed in just a few minutes. Two passes are enough to cover the full width of the bed.
  2. Effectiveness: the heat quickly destroys weeds, saving time without having to wait for full destruction by tarping.
  3. Optimised stale seedbed: we particularly use this tool for carrot cultivation, a crop that requires a perfectly clean seedbed.

The flame weeder is a versatile tool that can be effectively used on other crops outside those protected by tarping, such as beetroot. If needed, it can also be used to remove persistent weeds after a period of insufficient tarping.
